How to Write a Loom Video Application That Beats Live Interviews

Async-first companies use Loom screenings instead of live calls. Here’s how to nail the 2-minute video that gets you to the next round.

4 min read Updated May 25, 2026

The structure that works

0:00–0:15 — name, role you’re applying for, why. 0:15–1:15 — one specific shipped outcome from your CV in plain English. 1:15–1:45 — why this company specifically (be detailed). 1:45–2:00 — what you’d like to discuss next. Total: 2 minutes, max 3.

Filming tips

Webcam at eye level. Natural light from in front. Wired headset. Plain background. Stand if you can — energy translates. Rehearse once, record once, ship. If your second take isn’t way better, ship the first.

What to avoid

Reading from a script (sounds robotic). Going over 3 minutes. Apologising for "not being prepared". Excessive background music. Filters or visual effects.

When to use Loom unprompted

If you’re cold-applying and want to stand out, attach a 90-second Loom intro to your application. Many hiring managers say it’s the #1 thing that gets a CV moved from "no" to "let’s chat."
