A Cover Letter Template That Actually Works for Remote Roles

Five-paragraph structure that gets responses — with three example openings tailored to remote-first hiring.

4 min read Updated May 25, 2026

The 5-paragraph structure

1) One-line hook: why you, why this role. 2) One concrete result you’ve shipped that proves you can do the job. 3) Why this company specifically (not generic). 4) Your remote-readiness: timezone, communication, async habits. 5) Clear ask: a 15-min call, or "happy to start with a paid trial task."

Opening lines that work

"I’ve shipped 3 production GraphQL APIs in the last 18 months — your job description reads like exactly the kind of work I want to keep doing." Versus: "I am writing to apply for the position of…". The first signals you read the JD; the second signals a copy-paste.

What to skip

Skip: your full work history (that’s the CV). Generic "I’m a hard worker." Anything you can’t back up. References to your degree if you’re self-taught — your portfolio is the proof.

Length

250 words max. Recruiters read in 30 seconds. If they care after that, they’ll open the CV.
